It’s bold, seductive, warm and alluring! Whether you want to make a statement or just spice up some homey hues, Benjamin Moore’s 2018 Colour of the Year, AF-290 Caliente, is sure to please.
In an interview with Architectural Digest Magazine, Ellen O’Neill, Director of Strategic Design Intelligence for Benjamin Moore, talks of her inspiration for the colour that began with the pink spectrum she picked up on at the Women’s March in January 2017 in D.C. From this experience she decided “colour is voice.” With it’s soothing brown undertone, O’Neill and her team landed on Caliente for it’s charisma and ability to be more intimate than shocking. Following this, the team at Benjamin Moore embarked on an extensive journey all over the world and it is apparent from this year’s selection that they were seeing red!
Bring on the Bold!
Red can be a tricky colour to contend with but if you’ve just purchased your dream home and aren’t shy about using it, make a statement by placing Caliente as a focal point to a room or enveloping the room itself.

Subtle Infusions
Not a fan of the new colour strutting its stuff on all four walls? It’s ok, there are numerous ways to display Caliente in a more indirect manner, particularly if you’re selling your home and have to keep it fairly neutral. If you love the colour but can’t bring yourself to put it on the walls, try it on a backsplash, bookshelf, cabinet or other piece of furniture to show off its warmth and magnetism.

Just a Hint…
Still too much? Why not some window panels, pillows, throws, a rug or other accent pieces such as a lamp or abstract painting? You don’t need to cover a room or large fixture in this strong colour to bring personality. Using subtle hints of Caliente can bring a sense of intrigue and desire no matter the amount of exposure you would prefer.

Colour Trends for 2018
While Caliente sits pleasantly at one end of the spectrum, the remaining 22 colours in 2018’s palette are enjoyably spread out. Timid mixed with a few valiant tones, the casual grays, warm neutrals and blushing rosy shades come together to form an agreeable combination. Even though the palette includes a few of those pink spectrum shades, overall, it has undertones are quite earthy.
Whichever room you choose, Benjamin Moore makes it easy with this year’s palette to show voice through its colours.
