When you’re in the process of trying to sell your home, the impact organized, properly staged closets have on potential buyers cannot be overstated. A disorganized closet sends potential buyers the message that your home is too small. Perhaps more importantly, it also suggests that your closet is a reflection of your life – kind of a mess that may result in a deal for them.

On the other hand, an organized closet tells potential buyers that your home is big enough for them and gets them excited about what the possibilities of your home.

Here are some tips you can use to stage walk-in closets, linen closets and small closets to sell your home faster and for more:

  1. Donate, recycle, up-cycle it
  2. Organize it
  3. Make it beautiful
  4. Pay attention to the little details

Reduce the contents of your closet by about 50% to create visual space and to reduce untidiness. Start by reducing the clutter, pull everything out of the closet and if you don’t use it, let it go. Donate, recycle, up-cycle (converting old or discarded materials into something useful and often beautiful), hand-me-down – whatever it takes, if you have not used or worn it in the last year, just let it go.

Organize it

Placement is important. Organize clothing, linens and towels by colour and size. Grouping like items and colour groupings can make it easier find what you are looking for. Store off-season items in well-labelled bins or boxes.  Baskets, drawers and dividers all help to separate and organize. Custom shelving makes a huge difference when organizing a small closet space and there are plenty of options at all price points. Most shelving and closet storage can be adjusted to accommodate your needs and take advantage of your full closet space.  Door hangers and organizers are a great way to add extra storage for smaller items and accessories. Using matching baskets, or bins can make a big difference.

Pay attention to the little details

Closet hangers can make a bigger difference than you might expect. Wire hangers tend to tangle and slip, whereas wooden hangers can be bulky and take up precious space. Hanging clothing in the same direction on uniform smooth plastic or velvet lined hangers will take your closet organization to the next level. Check to make sure all the light bulbs are working and ensure there’s nothing on the floor.

A little bit of attention and common sense can get your closet back on track.  Think about what makes the most sense for your belongings and your space, and there will be a solution to bring out the best in your closet.
