Coldest Night of the Year Orillia Exceeds Their Goal

On Saturday, February 24th, 2018, nearly 25,000 walkers and volunteers participated in the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY), a family-friendly fundraiser that raises money for the hungry, homeless and hurting in 120 communities across Canada. The Faris Team was honoured to be the lead sponsor of the Orillia event which exceeded their goal by raising over $100,000 so far! Final tallies are still being calculated to include cash and cheque donations made on Saturday both locally and across the country, but so far the national total is over $4,370,000.

CNOY Orillia saw over 500 walkers and 100 volunteers gathered at the Lions Oval Public School in support of the Lighthouse Soup Kitchen and Shelter in Orillia. Participants had a choice to walk 2 km, 5 km, or 10 km. Several Faris Team members participated in the event, handing out the now famous Faris Team cookies to fuel the walkers prior to their start. Dressed in their Faris Team jerseys, many team members took part in the 2 km walk, and enjoyed the delicious warm meal that was donated to walkers upon their arrival back at the school.

Last year, the Lighthouse served close to 25,000 meals to men women, youth and children throughout the community, and has 14 beds for men which are full most nights.  Funds will also be put towards a dream that The Lighthouse team wish to build, called Building Hope.

Says Executive Director of the Lighthouse Soup Kitchen and Shelter, Linda Goodall, “We are also in our Building Hope campaign to build a new shelter for men, women, families and youth so part of the funds raised will go towards that as well. It’s a $6M campaign. Currently there’s no emergency homeless shelter for women, youth or families.”
