Augmented Reality Helps Bring the Showroom to Your Living Room

Augmented Reality (AR) is a technology that combines real and computer-generated worlds. Given a real subject captured on video or camera, the technology augments that real-world image with extra layers of digital information. AR is commonly used to enhance television sportscasts by creating the “first down” line in football which is superimposed on the screen, or flashing the score and player stats while a game is in play. AR is quickly becoming commonplace in the field of personal entertainment with apps like Snapchat or games like Pokémon Go. If you’re not into capturing Pokémon in your living room or taking video clips of yourself looking like a bumblebee, perhaps you might consider how AR can help your next room makeover.

Home décor has also been influenced by augmented reality. Pair brings the showroom into your living room by letting you see the products that you’d like to purchase virtually in your space as if you were there, by using the camera on your iPhone or iPad. If, for example, you’re looking to purchase a new couch for your living room, you can search through Pair’s virtual catalogue with over 13,000 items, and then use your mobile device’s camera to virtually imagine how that piece of furniture will look in that space. What is great about this app is that it accurately fits the item into your space with its actual dimensions to show how that piece will fit. You simply drag the furniture into the desired spaced while viewing the room through the camera lens of your device. You can walk around the 3D product to see how it looks from all angles and take a snapshot or video to share it. If you find the perfect items for that space, you can also purchase them online through the app’s catalogue to save you time. You can view items from IKEA, Herman Miller, Blu Dot, and more. Most recently, Pair teamed up with Wayfair, adding an additional 10,000 items to their virtual catalogue.
