Preparing for the Spring Thaw

With spring just around the corner, and many in our community with rooftops full of snow and large snow banks around our properties, here are a few tips to help facilitate the spring thaw.

Check for leaks & drafts:

Take a walk through your home paying close attention to windows and doors. Look for peeling or bubbling paint, which can often mean that water has crept in. Look for drafts and seal up any trim or moulding that shows signs of gaps.

Clearing your roof:

If you are able to reach the roof, try using long-handled snow rakes or poles. Should you require a ladder, make certain that the base is securely anchored. Ask a friend, family member or neighbour to hold the ladder while you climb. Consult a professional if you need to, they’re well prepared for this season!

Soffits:

Soffit baffles ensure ventilation gets into the attic. Soffits should be clear of debris and any obstructions for air to penetrate.

Attic considerations:

Ensure your attic is well ventilated and that you have a layer of good quality insulation on your attic. This helps to prevent an ice dam from forming on the roof which can lift shingles and allow moisture into your home.

Water flow:

Be a good neighbour and spend some time enjoying the fresh spring air while clearing any obstructions away from the sewer drain if it happens to be in the front of your home. This will help ensure the melted snow is easily directed away from your property – and everyone on the street with be thankful for that!

Prevention is key, so take some time to help ensure the rest of this season is a dry one! The Mark Faris Team wishes you a dry spring thaw, filled with blooming flowers and sun-filled longer days!
